Terry Statement on ISIL

Statement

Date: Sept. 17, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Rep. Lee Terry (R-NE) today made the following statement on the President's plan to train and equip vetted groups in Syria to fight ISIL:

"Today, I voted against the President's request to equip and train so-called moderate opposition groups from Syria to fight ISIL. I did so because I don't believe the President's plan is a solid, coherent strategy. I have a hard time committing American resources to a group of people I'm not sure we can trust.

"Regardless of the merits of his plan, the President already has the authority under current law to confront ISIL within the borders of Iraq. He doesn't need our vote today. The fact of the matter is that the President has simply chosen not to lead. We're in this position today because the President refused to take the advice of his generals to leave residual forces in Iraq. ISIL filled the vacuum he created."

"ISIL is clearly a threat. When the President finally decides to lead with a coherent strategy, that is when he should come to Congress."
